Summer Shade Solar is a 106 MW photovoltaic solar facility, plus storage, sited within Metcalfe County, Kentucky. Developed by Candela Renewables, the project is designed to bring clean, renewable energy to the region, with construction set to begin in Q2 2026 and commercial operations targeted for Q2 2028. Over its projected lifespan of 30 to 40 years, Summer Shade Solar will help meet the energy needs of local homes and businesses by converting sunlight into electricity and delivering it through the local electric grid.

The facility is sited near the Summer Shade substation, operated by East Kentucky Power, which was a key factor in selecting this location for the project. The substation’s existing infrastructure will ensure seamless integration of the energy produced by Summer Shade Solar into the broader power grid.
The project will include battery storage technology to ensure energy is available when demand is highest, providing reliable power even when the sun isn’t shining. The site design minimizes environmental impact, utilizing tracker technologies that reduce the need for grading. Agricultural-style fencing will allow for the passage of small wildlife, while vegetation management will include the possibility of integrating sheep grazing beneath the solar panels.

We are committed to sustainable development and maintaining strong relationships with the local community. The Candela team prioritizes being good neighbors and responsible stewards of the environment. We have worked closely with local leaders and community members to design a project that not only generates renewable energy but also provides economic benefits such as job creation and increased tax revenue. We are excited to be part of the Metcalfe County community and look forward to contributing to its future. Learn more about our team here.
